A historic press conference

German Tagesschau broadcasts that GDR Official Günter Schabowski has announced during a press conference that East German Citizens are allowed to travel the Federal Republic Germany whenever they want – immediately. Later in the evening German TV shows the members of the Bundestag spontaneously got up of their chairs and chanted our national anthem “Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit” (in engl. Unity and Justice and Freedom). But as there are no mobile or internet these days we just could follow the TV. When I got to bed I was aware of a historical moment. But I had no idea about it’s consequences. I still remember how our neighbouring countries in Europe and the entire world shared our happiness.
Die Tagesschau berichtet, das Mitglied des Zentralkommittees der SED, Günter Schabowski verkündet hat, die Bürger der DDR können jederzeit in den Westen ausreisen – und zwar ab sofort. Später am Abend zeigt das Fernsehen, wie die Mitglieder des Bundestags spontan aufstehen und “Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit singen”. Damals gab es noch kein Internet oder Mobiltelefone, wir konnten alles nur im Fernsehen verfolgen. Als ich schlafen ging, war mir klar, es ist ein historischer Augenblick. Aber ich ahnte nicht, welche Folgen dieser Tag haben wird. Ich erinnere mich noch daran, wie sich damals unsere europäischen Nachbarn und die ganze Welt mit uns gefreut haben.
